The Car Wash

The statement, “I can take my car to the wash” while very true and very much recommended on a regular basis, can lend to the idea that all that is needed to maintain a vehicles exterior is automated washes. I will say…. while very convenient for any car owner including detailers.. this is definitely a myth. Let’s consider some reasons why. For this article we’re going to assume you’ve been using a touches laser wash or self serve wash and not the auto washes with spinning scratch cloths and keeping away from the foam brush at self serve washes. (That’s another topic) Touchless Laser washes and self serve washes are great when combined with proper exterior care such as proper drying with a microfiber towel afterwards, regular (as in yearly or bi yearly) tar and grime removal from your paint. The issue is when these processes are foregone and only traditional washing is relied on for total care of the exterior. So let’s get technical. Alaska roads have no shortage of grime and road tar to sling on our vehicles, when these contaminates are allowed to sit on the vehicle for days, weeks or more, they bond to the vehicles surface. If these are allowed to dwell on a hot day in the sun? Ooh, It’s baked on! Touchless laser washes by their nature are designed to clean the vehicle without using mechanical force on the paint “Touchless”. Which means, while the vehicle is getting rinsed, soaped and washed these bonded contaminates are just waiting on your paint to be protected with diluted liquid wax or other diluted protectants! Wait.. what happens when this process happens again and again? The buildup of road tar and grime covered with wax or other protectants starts to feel like sandpaper on your vehicle. If you decide to hand wash, dry and wax with these contaminates sitting on the surface, the mechanical motion of hand cleaning or even drying can drag the contaminates across your paint causing millions of tiny micro marring scratches that dull your finish. I promise the goal is not to scare you, simply to inform so you can better care for your vehicle. So yes, the car wash is great! However, understanding what proper exterior care entails can lead to a cleaner, glossier exterior for your motor baby. (Whether gas or electric) If your wanting to get away from having to regularly wax your car altogether, or just make cleaning easier and more productive, even enjoyable..
